Engraving on Flat Stone.

Most of the engraved and etched stones that you will find available today are what you might term "round stones". That is to say, they are similar to the stones that you will find in a river bed or on a pebble beach, and have been naturally rounded by the action of running water and rubbing material.

These stones can be used to make very beautiful designs, as you can see if you look at our pages of engraved round stones, but suffer from some design disadvantages when compared with the stones on this and the preceding page:

A round stone is rounded in all three dimensions, so that while it may occupy a width of, say, 6 inches, the frontal area available for engraving may well only be 3 or 4 inches, with the balance used for the curvature of the sides. Flat stones offer almost all their frontal area for engraving.
A round stone has to be engraved "as-is", as we cannot alter its shape at will. Flat stones, on the other hand, can be cut without causing any degradation in the appearance of the whole stone. In fact, cutting may be used to produce exactly the size required.
A round stone has far greater depth than a flat stone. This results in a far greater weight for the same frontal surface area, and thus a correspondingly higher shipping charge.
